Soweto, SOUTH AFRICA / Southern Africa
GCA considers its Camp Sizanani t-shirts to be an important bonding element among campers. Campers even have a song that reflects the honor and joy of receiving the camp t-shirt. A t-shirt is also an identification symbol. It is guarded by children over the years as symbolic of something special they experienced.
When the children arrive at camp, they are a disparate lot, coming from many sections of the city and from many schools. When they return after camp, they have a unique bond of a shared experience, understood best by those who have been to camp. The t-shirt helps them sense that camaraderie with others who have been to camp. There are 27 generations of campers around Soweto. GCA often hears stories about campers from one session meeting campers from another session, identified only by their t-shirt.
