FKSW supports a school garden initiative at Michinda Primary School in Molo, Kenya. The initiative’s purpose is to teach children about food, agriculture and the environment. Among the projects in Michinda is an indigenous chicken project aimed at supplementing the school feeding program, providing hands-on experience in food production for the students and becoming a source of breeding stock for the community. The initiative prepares youths to become responsible farmers and conscious food consumers.
The school needs a second one so that students can move the birds between the two every three months as a strategy for disease and pest management. Fencing for a new enclosure is also required. The Michinda Primary School garden project involves 50 students drawn from all over Kenya and of all ethnic backgrounds, some of whom have never handled livestock. The project will enhance opportunities for learning and for hands on experience for these youth and contribute to the improvement of their diet in school. Community members on the other hand will access breeding stock for their families and hence improved food and nutrition situation and health for the community. The students also sell eggs to the school faculty, thereby learning the rudiments of business. The new coop will be constructed within one month of FKSW receiving funds for the project.
