Chaung Mya Gyi, MYANMAR / Southeast Asia and Pacific Islands
For $100 a four-person teak boat can be purchased, providing a means for a livelihood for multiple families in the impoverished village of Chaung Mya Gyi. Such an opportunity would be welcomed by the villagers, many of whom lost everything of value in cyclone Nargis, such as livestock, huts, seeds and stored vegetables. Many men were forced to take jobs as day-laborers, earning an insufficient salary to buy food for their families.
Villagers will be able to access areas flush with fish in the small boats. They can use the fish to feed their families and sell the excess to earn money. Building Hope in Burma will purchase the boats from a local boat-maker, thus contributing to the village’s economy. This is an on-going project; the organization will purchase multiple boats if funding allows.
