The Harbor plans to expand its programs’ reach to more orphans. Teaching computer skills is a great way to do this. State-run orphanage directors are very willing to allow The Harbor access to the younger orphans to teach them these skills. This is something they cannot do, yet recognize its importance to the future of the orphans. In addition, all The Harbor’s current residents and graduates want continued education and training in this area. Five new computers would allow The Harbor to expand its programs to its own program participants and those in state-run orphanages.
The computer class The Harbor already provides teaches some of the most essential skills for employment and successful adaptation into society. Unfortunately, The Harbor’s current resources are severely limited such that students do not get to spend adequate time with a computer. Adding five computers would mean more access for program participants.
The Harbor’s Vocational Training Center (VTC) is designed to supplement its residential program in several ways. It allows participants to gain additional experience in a number of vocations that will help round out their life skills. These vocations also give participants a taste of many possible career options so they have a clearer idea of what they want to pursue for long-term employment. Lastly, the VTC expands The Harbor’s influence in the community by allowing it to teach and serve many younger orphans who are not yet eligible for The Harbor’s residential program.
The Harbor currently teaches a computer literacy class in the VTC, but hopes to expand to teach more advanced courses such as computer programming and graphic design. New computers would greatly aid in this endeavor.
The Harbor has found computers within its budget. It could procure them within 2 weeks of the project being fully funded. The Harbor will measure the success of this project by both the quantity of students and the quality of skills it is able to teach in its computer classes. Expanded computer courses will begin two weeks after the project is fully funded.
