CSK aims to provide basic health care services for the 20 former street children it supports. These costs amount to approximately $4,300 each year (taken from an average of the past three years).
The program keeps children health and in school. The funds also cover medical costs of the students’ immediate family members in emergencies – a student cannot be in school if they must tend to an ailing parent.
Medical and dental costs are necessary to maintain the 20 former street children CSK supports in school, the ultimate goal of the CSK program. Services have been provided at reasonable cost by a Vietnamese physician and a Cambodian dentist in Phnom Penh, as well as other local health providers.
A local manager for CSK in Phnom Penh assesses the children’s health needs when they arise and transports them to the appropriate clinic or hospital, after which she pays the costs directly to the provider. CSK’s provision of this service allows children to concentrate on their studies.
