FKSW helped sponsor a medical camp for the impoverished villagers of Kokwa Island, at which 39 Kenyan medical professionals volunteered their services for an entire day to conduct the initial health assessment of residents. The 281 residents were given physical examinations and screened for tuberculosis, malaria, HIV-AIDS, etc. A barber shaved heads and treated scalps for fungal infections and infestations.
Chief among the issues identified were (1) a determination that 85% of the children 0-5 were malnourished, (2) there are high levels of respiratory ailments among children, (3) there are high levels of arthritis/lumbago in adults. In a follow-up meeting, medical volunteers and directors of FKSW agreed to provide follow up services. This island community is isolated and extremely poor. The community members need education and training in basic health, nutrition, hygiene and disease prevention. At the FKSW-sponsored Medical Camp #2, further tests will be conducted and to determine the deficiencies of vitamins and minerals that exist in the children and lactating mothers. A seminar will also be given on nutrition and hygiene, as well as HIV/AIDS. The barber will again shave heads and treat for scalp problems. The requested $850 will cover the 18 physicians who have agreed to attend and will pay for the medicines they will bring with them.
