GCA employs a nurse to attend all camp sessions to tend to children and dispense medicines, including HIV-related meds. GCA provides room and board and a small stipend, totalling $350 per session. A nurse in residence is a great source of comfort. It is also a convenience, as it means GCA does not have to disrupt camp and spend excessive money to take a child to the hospital or doctor’s offices for minor injuries.
GCA’s needs for a nurse are no greater than at a school or camp in the U.S., but inattention to the details of children’s meds when they are HIV+ and are on antiretroviral medication can have drastic consequences. It is thus important to ensure proper care is available in the form of a trained health professional.
