Nairobi, KENYA / Southern Africa
Starfish Africa endeavors to closely monitor the academic performance of its 38 sponsored students, in addition to keeping clear and transparent records of its operations. In order to do this in an efficient manner, S.A. recently decided to rent an office space for its field officer (after 4 years of that field officer running operations out of his home). However, this office space comes at an expense to the organization.
By funding the rent needed for S.A.’s office space, a donor would be directly benefitting the needs of 38 truly talented, but truly needy high school students who are currently attending secondary schools in Kenya. The Starfish Africa Students depend heavily on the coordination and oversight of Starfish Africa’s field officer. By providing the requested office space necessary to effectively run the S.A. program in-country, a donor would be directly benefiting the kids.
Starfish Africa’s’s field officer in Kenya recently began using the office space that is the subject of this request – a need that was identified and confirmed during a recent (April 2009) visit to Kenya by S.A.’s president. The expenses related to this office rent and other associated fees have created a new need for funds in S.A.’s budget.
If Starfish Africa received the $3,000 USD necessary to fund its office rent in Kenya for 1 year, it would be able to maintain a consistent level of oversight for its Kenyan operations and the performance of the 38 students it currently sponsors by maintaining a consistent physical location instead of having to move to a lower-rent space.
The steps for accomplishing this project are straightforward. During his recent trip to Kenya, S.A.’s president inspected the office space used by Starfish Africa. He confirmed that both the rent and the fees paid for services (e.g., internet) were affordable and appropriately scaled to S.A.’s needs. Since this inspection has taken place and the need for the space has been validated, the only remaining step is to raise the funds to cover the rent and expenses related to the office.
