The Harbor wishes to increase the salary of its program director from $1,000 per month to $1,500 per month. This increase of $500 per month (a total of $6,000 for the year) would bring her salary to an average salary level in today’s Russian economy.
The entire community of The Harbor would be positively influenced by this project. Luba Yaravaya has been with The Harbor since its first day in 2001, serving as the Program Director, in which capacity she runs the organization’s day-to-day affairs. Before coming to The Harbor Luba had her own sewing business in the Ukraine. She came to St. Petersburg because she felt led by the Lord to get a degree in Bible Studies. She completed her BA in Biblical Studies and became The Harbor’s first director. Since then she has completed her B.A. in Psychology and earned another BA in business.
Luba has worked tirelessly for The Harbor since its inception. She has fleshed out every aspect of its vision, and has been instrumental in its expansion. Luba does everything from hiring, training, and managing staff, selecting and preparing participants, networking with orphanages, public relations, management of The Harbor’s six facilities, liaising with government officials teaching in the Vocational Training Center, mentoring when needed, and absolutely anything and everything else that is needed.
Luba worked without pay for the first three months with The Harbor, yet she was convinced of her calling and the Lord’s provision. Since then she has worked for a salary that is substantially below her market value. She has done this with joy and without complaint. Yet the economic reality in Russia, where inflation is between 12-15% annually, and deflation of the ruble are crushing the staff from both ends. The reality is that without an increase she may have to get a second job. She is vital to the success of The Harbor and to replace her with a foreigner would cost four to five times her salary. Investing in her is most wise and cost effective stewardship of The Harbor’s Resources.
Luba is exceptionally well positioned to direct this program into the future. She has been with it since day one. She is experienced, educated, and is a tireless worker. She loves the staff and participants with her whole heart and they respond with incredible loyalty and devotion to her. She has multiplied herself many times over and is a most worthy investment. The Harbor has every confidence Luba will continue to do great work for the organization.
