Helping Hands desires to implement a computer literacy program for the orphans it supports. Currently, the children in the two orphanages have no access to computers, let alone the Internet. In the current technological age, this lack of familiarity with even the most basic of computer skills proves a significant impediment to the orphans as they seek employment upon leaving the orphanage.
Having a computer on which to learn about computers and practice typing will go far in making the orphans more competitive for jobs in the future and will also enhance their self-esteem as they develop and master new skills. Helping Hands will keep one computer at each of the two orphanages it serves, and will hold weekly lessons on topics such as basic typing and using spreadsheets. In the future, after the orphans become familiar with the computers, Helping Hands will seek funding for Internet access so children can learn to use the web to gain information and job search.
