Village Environment Community Gangkharka (VEC) sponsors the primary education of youths from the Nepalese region of Helambu, set high in the Himalayan mountains, and works to provide further opportunities for continuing education, employment and cultural preservation. The organization has sponsored more than 60 students in the capital city of Kathmandu, but is currently constructing a boarding school in the village of Gangkharka, from which many of the sponsored students come. The new school will promote a progressive curriculum while still respecting the unique traditional culture that exists in the Helambu region.

VEC also runs broader economic development programs aimed at providing jobs in the impoverished region of Helambu, thus stemming the flow of workers out of their ancestral homelands to find work abroad. In addition, VEC has provided medical treatment to many in the village of Gangkharka, and is set to construct a clinic to better serve villagers. VEC promotes change for the better while respecting the cultural institutions and traditions that make the Himalayan region a truly distinct and special place.

Projects undertaken by VEC in its first years included construction of a bridge, the building of a water mill, and other such undertakings conducive to development. VEC’s core mission has been refined to focus on education and health. Convinced that education is the key to a better life for Nepal’s impoverished population, VEC has sponsored local youths at boarding schools in Kathmandu and broke ground in 2008 on a boarding school of its own in Gangkharka, which will host around 100 students. Teachers from Nepal and abroad will give students a diverse education while respecting local customs, with the hope of becoming a model for rural education in Nepal.

VEC’s medical program meets the immediate, physical needs of a population that otherwise has limited access to health care – indeed, some 80% of Nepalese have no access to health care. The organization is doing much to move things forward in Nepal while preserving the rich heritage that exists in the storied Himalayans.

Affiliate History
VEC was formed in 2000 by life-long Gangkharka resident Dorjee Sherpa, for the purpose of providing much-needed education and health-care advancements for Nepalese villagers in remote regions of the Himalayan mountains. Concerned that the region’s unique traditions and culture were fading as many of the Sherpa, Yolmo, and Tamang peoples indigenous to the area left for better economic opportunities abroad, Dorjee created a development organization that would be broad-based and perform various projects aimed at making life better for villagers in the region.
