Project Details
WOMEN Hyderabad plans to engage two local teachers to teach women in the slum of Asifnagar to read and write in their local language. A majority of women in the slums of India are illiterate, and are accordingly routinely taken advantage of by those who prey on this deficiency. Being able to read and write will empower the women to better handle their day-to-day activities as they increase their capacity to communicate in the written word. Two courses, one in Urdu and the other in Telugu, will be taught to a total of 40 women over the course of four months. The courses will be intensive, with meetings lasting throughout each weekday. The price of this project will cover a small salary for the two teachers and will allow them to buy pencils, papers, and workbooks for the women in the classes. By increasing their literacy, the women will be less open to exploitation and will enhance their prospects of securing meaningful employment in an increasingly competitive Indian work force.WOMEN Hyderabad
