Project Details
A dedicated group of teachers in a rural area of Kenya called Kokwa Island are determined to give children the start they need in life - you can help them. The local aid organization Friends of Kenyan Schools and Wildlife (FKSW) wants to build a small nursery school for use by 40 local children who at present meet for class under a tree. With no protection from the elements, learning is limited as distractions persist and it is often simply too hot in the blaring sun to get anything done. Having a rudimentary concrete building will provide a cool, comfortable place for nursery classes to take place, contributing to the development of children who face many hardships in this impoverished area and who need every advantage they can get. In addition to learning to read and write and developing social skills through interaction, students at the nursery school are provided a meal each day; for many it is their only meal of the day. FKSW staff will oversee the construction of the nursery school building, which will commence within one month of this project being fully funded, and should be completed within one month after building begins. Just $2,150 will provide a safe, comfortable place for children to learn and grow. FKSW is a trusted partner of WideAwake.org and has done much good in Kenya for those who need assistance. With a primary focus on education, FKSW sets up Kenyan youths for success later in life while also helping to meet their immediate needs. The construction of a nursery school at Kokwa Island will be major step toward sustainable development for the entire community. In addition to serving as a place for nursery school, the facility will be used for community events sponsored by FKSW and aimed at imparting the knowledge and skills that will help the area's residents do more with their very limited resources. The $2,150 called for by this project will go toward the puchase of concrete, roofing materials and windows for the structure, as well toward the minimal labor costs associated with the construction.Friends of Kenya Schools and Wildlife
