Yamini desires to give a series of presentations to the parents of mentally handicapped children attending its school for the purpose of better informing them about various issues implicated under such circumstances. Some of the program’s goals are to help parents better understand their children’s disabilities, spot areas in which the children need extra help and to acquire necessary support, learn how to give better care at home, and how to take advantage of government benefits for persons whose children have disabilities. These are crucial in a society where persons with disabilities are often shunned and where popular myths comprise the accepted knowledge concerning the cause of disabilities and their effects.Health professionals have agreed to volunteer to present at the sessions, allowing Yamini to pay for only the use of facilities at a local university and for accompanying printed materials. The program will last for six months total, with six groups of no more than 30 parents in each group attending training seminars for three consecutive nights, each. Thus, around 180 parents from the Hyderabad area are expected to attend, including those of the children who attend Yamini’s school.Yamini Foundation
