Nablus-based aid organization Project Hope seeks to purchase metal bins for use in its art program. Students will be taught how to construct metal recycling containers in various artistic shapes. The container, placed in a public area at a school, will be both functional as a recycling bin and aesthetically-interesting as an art installation. The items collected in the bins will provide materials for a recycling-art class. The $210 called for by this project will purchase one metal tin and the materials that will create one recycling bin. This is an on-going project, meaning that as many bins will be created as funding allows; every $210 given toward this project will lead to an additional bin.
There is a startling lack of concern for the environment in the Palestinian territories. After years of strife, people have gotten used to a rough-looking landscape and have forgotten to take pride in the scenery. Rubbish is strewn along roads in cities and camps, along the highways, in fields and in empty lots. A common method of getting rid of rubbish is burning, which is both hazardous to health and bad for the environment. There is hardly any formal education on environmental issues as well as a dearth of large-scale, systematic recycling schemes. The interactive recycling bin/ art installation will make it fun for children to recycle and, hopefully, get them into the habit of recycling even after the project ends. Reusing the collected items to create new objects will show students that, with a bit of imagination and creativity, rubbish can be a valuable resource. Through the students’ interaction with their teachers and parents, the project will also familiarize adults with the recycling process. Hopefully, students will think twice before discarding non-organic items and make an effort to turn their “rubbish” into something useful and beautiful.
