Project Details

On Eagles' Wings (OEW), a Nicaraguan aid organization, plans to build a sports complex that will be used to host baseball and soccer leagues and camps for at-risk youths.  The facility will be built on land already owned by OEW within 3 months of this project being fully funded.  The total cost is $8,200, of which $6,200 will go toward construction materials, with the remainder, $2,000, being put toward the labor necessary to build the facility.  The facitility will be completed and ready for use within approximately 3 months of this project being fully funded.  OEW has already received quotes for all aspects of the undertaking and is prepared to commence construction as soon as this project is funded.

OEW hosts soccer and baseball leagues and clinics for youths in the impoverished region around the city of Leon, where drugs and gang violence run rampant, drawing in children and destroying lives.  OEW offers athletics as an alternative to the destructive vices that harm so many in the area.  On Eagles' Wings uses baseball and soccer as venues to teach kids about healthy life habits and to help them make the decisions that will lead to a better future.  In educational classes and counseling that accompany the sports activities, OEW provides at-risk kids the tools they need to make positive choices.  The sports programs are rooted in Christian values, with children receiving religious instruction as part of the leagues and sports camps.

The sports facility is necessary to enable the sports programs to reach their true potential.  At present, OEW rents out sports fields; this is an expensive undertaking - having its own facility will be a much more cost-effective way to operate.  Additionally, the scorching sun makes it difficult for OEW to run its sports programs in the summer.  Children cannot stand the heat for more than an hour or so at a time.  The new facility will solve this problem, as it will have a roof (one high enough to accommodate baseball!) that will block the sun.

On Eagles' Wings has been feeding the poor in Nicaragua since 2008, and also carries out various other programs that help meet the physical and spiritual needs of those in the country.  The organization is a trusted partner of WideAwake.org; our leadership team has worked with OEW on multiple projects, and is honored to contribute to the great work the group is doing to make a positive impact on thousands of lives on a daily basis in Nicaragua.
