Project Details

The Foundation Debora Academy imparts the kind of skills that help at-risk women in Guatemala take control of their lives.  Run by Guatemalan aid group Foundation Debora, the Academy is accredited by the government as an official trade school, making the degrees it grants upon completion of its 20 month courses something of true value.  The Academy grants degrees in the following fields: beautician; home accessory craft-maker; cooking; bakery; confectionary; textiles; and techonology operator (computer skills).   The women attend the Academy in the evenings, for a total of 9 hours per week, and are all either victims of violence or are living in extreme poverty.  In addition to receiving the skills and a degree that will allow them to seek a steady job and pull themselves out of desperate poverty, participants receive medical and dental attention and receive training on how to successfully find a job.

This project will cover the entire cost of attendance of a student at the Academy.  For just $510, donors will have the satisfaction of knowing they are truly giving toward something worthwhile - something that will make a long-term difference in someone's life.  The $510 asked for by this project covers the course materials, building rent and other expenses incurred in providing a course for a student.  This is an on-going project, meaning as many individuals will receive a one year scholarship as funding allows.

Foundation Debora is a trusted partner of WideAwake.org, and is doing a world of good to assist female victims of violence and women living in abject poverty in Guatemala.  This project ensures a brighter future for these women by giving them the skills and the degree they need to get on steady footing going forward.
