Project Details

Currently the government supplies a copy of every needed text book for all students in the first grade. Beyond that it is up to the students and their families to purchase their own books each year. As a result there is often a gap in level of achievement related to financial ability of the families in the village. The poorest students often have no school supplies and are unable to fully participate in class or do homework. Those in the middle income levels often purchase used books from neighbors that have pages missing, writing in them, and answers written for exercises. As a result they often fall behind over time, become frustrated and disinterested and as a result very few poorer students have a serious chance of attending a university. We will purchase one copy of each text book on the national curriculum for grades two through twelve in the local school, for use by children below the poverty line. The books will be kept at the school and be school property. When the official list of students living under the poverty level is released, the school will lend these textbooks to the students on the list, who will return them at the end of the academic year. The Project will help increase levels of education for the village’s poorest residents, giving them a chance to dig out of poverty.
