Project Details

Helping Hands, a Ukrainian aid organization, aims to provide necessary first aid kits and rudimentary medicines for the children living in the two orphanages it supports. The orphans currently lack adequate first aid supplies, making the scrapes and small cuts children routinely incur a much bigger threat than they should be. All too often a small cut becomes infected, presenting a real health risk that could have been avoided with the most basic first aid supplies. The project will also cover rudimentary medicines, such as basic vitamins that will deliver the nutrients the often-undernourished children badly need. Eyeglasses will also be provided to children with exceptionally poor vision, literally exposing them to a whole new world. Even these basic provisions can make a huge difference for children for whom, without access to medical services that many in the U.S. take for granted, the value of staying healthy cannot be understated. Helping Hands will be able to provide an entire year’s worth of first aid and medical supplies for the orphans it serves for only $1,200. Roughly one third of the money will be spent on first aid supplies, while the other two-thirds will go toward vitamins, cough medicines and other basic medicines, as well as eyeglasses. With the proper supplies, a common cough will not stretch over a month, and a sore throat will not intensify so that it totally incapacitates a child for weeks at a time. First aid supplies, including band aids, antiseptics, ointments, burn cream, gauze, and the like will truly make a difference in the health of the children. Vitamins will help make up for deficiencies in the orphans’ diets, and new eyeglasses will mean that children will no longer suffer headaches caused by squinting to read. The medicines and first aid supplies will be administered by an orphanage staffer trained in first aid.
